Chapter 01

What makes a country hard to conquer

Some countries are simply harder to invade than others, and the reasons are unglamorous and mostly physical. Oceans. Mountains. Deserts. Rivers. Distance from any serious rival. A grid that keeps running under bombardment. A population willing to fight in the streets. A nuclear arsenal. And, above all, allies who will bleed for you. Defensibility is a stack, not a single feature: the countries that sleep well at night have five or six of these layers, and the countries that do not sleep well tend to have one or none.

The geographic layer — oceans, mountains, rivers

Tim Marshall's argument in Prisoners of Geography starts here. The US is bordered by two oceans and two friendly neighbours. Britain and Japan are islands. Switzerland is a fortress of Alps. Chile hides behind the Andes and the Pacific. Russia's western flank is the exact opposite: the North European Plain runs uninterrupted from France to Moscow, which is why every major invasion of Russia (Napoleon, Kaiser, Hitler) came along that same corridor, and why Moscow's core security demand for 300 years has been forward buffers. Geography does not determine everything, but it sets the difficulty level: some countries are playing on Easy, others on Nightmare.

Strategic depth — the space to lose ground

Strategic depth is the ability to trade land for time. Russia has it in enormous quantities: an invader has to cross a thousand kilometres of hostile territory before touching anything vital. China has it inland, which is exactly why it has spent seventy years fortifying Tibet, Xinjiang and Manchuria as an internal buffer ring. Ukraine, by contrast, is almost pure plain — no mountains west of the Carpathians, no significant rivers running the right way. Israel has effectively no depth at all: its narrow waist is nine miles wide, which is why its doctrine is offensive, pre-emptive and heavily reliant on early warning. Small country plus flat terrain plus hostile neighbours equals a very short list of survivable strategies.

The nuclear layer — the ultimate insurance

Nine states currently possess nuclear weapons: the US, Russia, China, France, the UK, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. None of them has ever been invaded by another state since acquiring them. That is not a coincidence; it is the entire point of the arsenal. The lesson small states have taken from Ukraine is bleak and explicit: Kyiv gave up the world's third-largest nuclear stockpile in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum in return for security assurances that turned out not to be worth the paper. Every South Korean, Japanese, Polish and Saudi debate about 'independent deterrents' since 2022 traces back to that one comparison. Nuclear weapons do not make you popular; they make you sovereign.

Chapter 05

The alliance layer — bleeding for someone else's border

An alliance is a promise to bleed for someone else's border, and only a handful of them have ever been honoured. NATO's Article 5 has been triggered once — by the US, after 9/11 — and every European member sent troops. The US–Japan and US–Korea treaties keep 80,000 American soldiers on East Asian soil as a tripwire. AUKUS commits Britain and Australia to a nuclear-submarine partnership that only makes sense as a shared bet on China. Poland's 4% defence spending, Finland's and Sweden's rush into NATO, South Korea's quiet nuclear latency — all are alliance-management moves. A country that is inside a serious alliance is defensible on the cheap. A country that is not has to buy its own deterrent, and few can afford it.

The resilience layer — society, industry, grid

Modern war targets societies, not just armies. Ukraine has taught the world how much resilience matters: distributed power generation, hardened telecoms (Starlink), a domestic drone industry that scaled from zero to millions of units in three years, a population that stayed and fought, and — crucially — enough Western support to keep the ammunition flowing. Israel's Iron Dome, Taiwan's civil-defence exercises, Finland's serious conscription and enormous shelter network, Switzerland's decentralised militia system — these are all bets on the same principle. A country that can absorb the first blow, keep the lights on and keep producing weapons under fire is far harder to defeat than one that cannot.

Chapter 07

The logistics layer — the tyranny of distance

It is very hard to project serious military power far from home, and this favours defenders. The Falklands taught Britain that lesson expensively in 1982. The US learned it again in Iraq and Afghanistan: even the world's dominant navy and air force struggle to sustain large ground campaigns 10,000 kilometres from base. That same tyranny is why an American amphibious assault on the Chinese mainland is essentially unthinkable, and why a Chinese amphibious assault on Taiwan is one of the hardest military operations ever contemplated — a 180-kilometre strait, monsoon seasons, only a handful of usable beaches, and a defender who has spent decades preparing. Defensibility is often just the enemy's supply line stretched past breaking point.

The five hardest targets on earth

Rank the countries by how many defensibility layers they stack. The United States: two oceans, friendly neighbours, nuclear arsenal, dominant navy, global alliance system, resilient industry. Russia: enormous depth, nuclear arsenal, harsh climate, one plain-shaped weakness in the west. China: continental fortress, nuclear arsenal, huge army, sea approaches ringed by US allies. The United Kingdom: island, nuclear arsenal, NATO. Israel: no depth at all, but early warning, air superiority, nuclear ambiguity and an ironclad US alliance. Each is defensible in a completely different way, and studying them together is the best short course in what security actually costs.

Chapter 09

Defensibility is a design choice

You cannot move your mountains, but almost every other layer is a choice. Alliances are chosen. Nuclear latency is chosen. Domestic arms production, strategic reserves, civil-defence networks, resilient grids, distributed telecoms, conscription, hardened data centres — all chosen, all expensive, all boring in peacetime and priceless in war. The countries that will be secure in 2050 are not the lucky ones. They are the ones that decided, a decade earlier, to pay for the layers they did not inherit.
